The Kuvasz is a large, powerful working dog from Hungary whose primary function was originally to protect livestock. The ancestors of modern Hungarians, the nomadic Magyars, settled in the Carpathian Basin during the Middle Ages, which is when this breed’s history began. They arrived from the east, possibly as far away as Tibet, with large working dogs.

Ownership of these dogs eventually became limited to the nobility after they first gained popularity among livestock owners. No one established a breed standard until the 19th century. Despite the Kuvasz being approved by the American Kennel Club in 1931, its native Hungary was devastated in the years that followed. Only 30 dogs were saved from the World War II wreckage when it was intentionally attacked by occupying soldiers. After years of careful breeding, the Kuvasz is now highly regarded as a companion and guard dog.
The Kuvasz is distinguished by its drooping ears, almond-shaped eyes, and wedge-shaped head. Two layers make up the opulent all-white: guard hairs on the outside and a finer undercoat inside. As a result, it feels very thick and somewhat coarse.
The two breeds are believed to be extremely closely related despite having very different geographic ranges (the Great Pyrenees, as its name suggests, originated close to the Pyrenees region of southern France). They are both large, covered in thick white fur, and possess protective personalities. The Great Pyrenees is primarily distinguished from other breeds by having a wider head, heavier bones (which make movement more difficult), patches of gray or tan fur, and a double dew claw on the back foot.
