Expressing the Bladder & Diapers: Why Both Are Essential
Pet diapers are not a substitute for expressing your animal’s bladder. Even when using male wraps or dog diapers, it’s still important to express the bladder. Every eight hours, the bladder must be completely emptied to prevent infection. Infection can result from even a small amount of urine remaining in the bladder. Your pet’s skin can be very sensitive. Additionally, both urine and diapers can irritate pets’ skin, scald their urine, or cause irritation. Having your pet express their bladder will help to reduce the amount of urine that comes in contact with their skin.
Pet diapers can be helpful in managing bowel incontinence, but they are only one part of a complete program of bowel care. Expressing the bowel is healthier for your pet than wearing a diaper. If you express your pet’s bowel, feed your pet a diet that produces quality stools, and work with your pet’s natural elimination schedule. Diapering may become unnecessary.
