The double-suspension gallop is a type of running that the greyhound uses that is similar to a cheetah’s. Greyhounds and many other fast dogs have two periods of suspension during their fastest gallop: the contracted phase, like the horse, plus the extended phase, like the image of the Greyhound on the side of the bus. This is in contrast to horses, which have only one suspension phase during their galloping stride (the phase when they are all contracted beneath the body). This is called a double-suspension gallop. How often have we heard someone claim that their Basset Hound or other dog can run 55 mph because they “clocked him next to the car.” It turns out that measuring animal speed is more difficult than it first appears, so perhaps the greyhound should really challenge the cheetah to a race.
