Read on to learn what paperwork they required, how stressful they found it, how much fun they had, and how it was for our dear friend Gypsy to fly in the cabin with her parents last Christmas. Sadly, the pandemic forced them to spend this Christmas in London, but we thought it would be a good opportunity to ask them about their epic journey during the holiday season.

Please be aware that due to Brexit, although the Canada portion of the journey would still be accurate information, there may be impending changes to the regulations for bringing your dog into the UK from other European countries. Before making a reservation, please conduct your own research. Once the laws are made public, we will update this page and any other pertinent sections of our website.

We’ll talk with Gypsy, a close friend who goes by the Twitter handle @gypsy, today. Don’t let us ruin the story; let’s hear it straight from onthehill on Instagram and her lovely mother Bihter about how they traveled to Canada from the UK for a happy occasion.

A: Gypsy and her humans are obviously well known to and loved by us, but let us first introduce you to our readers. Please tell us a little about your gorgeous little girl.

The little muffin, who is now 16 months old and has been in our care since she was 8 weeks old, has had a hectic year and a half.

Gypsy is… sassy! She loves people, absolutely loves them. She is also very flirty (selectively so), really mild-mannered, fun-loving, and occasionally a worrywart. We often joke that if an intruder ever came in, she would just bring her ball to play fetch with them hah!

Particularly when I use the restroom and don’t allow her to follow me in Is she worrying I will fall into the toilet? Maybe!”.

How about Gypsy’s parents? A: The joys of Cavaliers – they do have the loveliest temperament.

We are Jordan and Bihter, ages 33 and 39, respectively. I like to think she gets her sass from me (the mother) and her love of fun from papa (Jordan).

Jordan is employed by a major architectural firm in London, while I’m attempting to complete my law conversion in the UK.

We enjoy taking long strolls in the nearby park as much as we enjoy relaxing on the couch while watching old episodes of Parks & Recreation or creating imaginary travel playlists for our upcoming dog-friendly vacation. ”.

Can you tell us about your ties to Canada? As dog parents, we can totally relate.

A – “I moved from Turkey to Canada when I was a young child, but Jordan is from Canada.” Every Christmas, we travel back to Toronto because both of our parents still live there. ”.

Would you mind sharing with our readers the reason(s) behind your recent trip to Canada? We know it was for a happy occasion.

A – “2019 was a crazy year for us; so many amazing things occurred – Jordan finally listened to my threats and moved to London from Denmark, we found a gorgeous home, got Gypsy, and got engaged!

After that, we quickly decided to have the wedding during our Christmas vacation in Canada because both of our grandmothers would be in Toronto and we really wanted them to be able to attend. Given that I dislike the cold, I’ve always been hesitant to have a winter wedding, but it turned out so beautifully!

Our little girl was the only thing missing because dogs were not permitted at the location. Yes, we also protested that hard. ”.

How did you decide to bring Gypsy with you? A: Congratulations to the happy couple and their adorable little girl.

A – “It wasn’t even a question for me, honestly. Gypsy was coming to Canada with us over Christmas, so I had already done all my research before we went to pick her up to bring her home.

It was decided upon when you consider the enthusiasm both of our families had for meeting the infant.

In addition to our return to the UK, which would have been the best for Gypsy, I made a list of all the airlines that permitted in-cabin transportation. ”.

Paperwork for taking dogs and cats to Canada

The only other document needed is a “fit to fly” letter from the veterinarian attesting that the animal has been examined, is healthy enough to fly, and has received the rabies vaccination mentioned above. We advise issuing this no later than 72 hours before departure.

A DEFRA export certificate that attests the animal is coming from a rabies-free nation is required if your pet has not received a rabies vaccination. The DEFRA export health certificate must be requested well in advance of departure, and only an OV (Official Veterinarian) can complete it. But please keep in mind that the DEFRA Export Health Certificate is NOT necessary if a rabies vaccination has been administered.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) will examine your pet’s importation paperwork upon arrival in Canada, and a visual examination will be done to check for any signs of illness. Fees must be paid upon arrival for this service.

If you are looking to import pets other than dogs and cats to Canada, there are varying requirements depending on the species and province of residence. For example, domestic rabbits and ferrets are subject to permits and quarantine. Whereas, pet reptiles or amphibians (excluding tortoises and turtles) do not require border inspection, permits etc. To obtain the most accurate information in relation to your specific pet travel requirements, please visit the Government of Canada.

There are a few airlines that run direct flights to Canada that are accommodating of both passengers and pets, though the latter must travel in the cargo hold as opposed to the cabin. These airlines include:

  • Air Canada
  • British Airways
  • Air Transat
  • There are also in-direct options that might provide access to more locations, like Lufthansa or KLM, both of which have excellent on-site amenities for pets during the layover. Even though not all aircraft can carry animals to Canada, more and more are The facilities to receive pets might not always be available at some of the smaller airports, though.
