The year 1998 sees The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime take place in and around the English town of Swindon. Christopher John Francis Boone, the story’s fifteen-year-old narrator, goes on the hunt for the murderer after finding Wellington, his neighbor’s dead poodle, on the neighbor’s front lawn one evening. The mild form of autism he has impairs his investigation at times and helps other times. The police detain Christopher after he strikes a police officer at the scene of the crime due to a misunderstanding. They only give Christopher a severe warning before releasing him in exchange for his promise to them and his father not to continue looking into the murder.
As part of a school assignment, Christopher documents his investigation in the book we are currently reading. Christopher investigates the crime scene and speaks with the residents of his block despite his father’s repeated warnings. When he learns that his father and Mrs. X, the owner of the murdered dog, are involved, he discovers a more complicated conspiracy than initially seemed to be the case. Shears, had a romantic affair. He later discovers that their relationship started in response to another one, one that was maintained between Mr. Shears and Christopher’s mother, before she disappeared from Christopher’s life.
Christopher studies at school for an A-level math exam that will allow him to enroll in a university, a feat no other student at his school has accomplished. He also continues to work on his book. One afternoon when he gets home, Christopher makes the mistake of leaving his book on the kitchen table. His father reads it, becomes angry, and confiscates it. Later, while looking for the book, Christopher discovers a number of letters from his purportedly deceased mother to him that were stashed away in a shirt box in his father’s closet. The letters document the life his mother continued to live with Mr. Christopher is repeatedly asked to respond in Shears in London. Christopher collapses in shock in his bedroom while surrounded by his father’s false testimony. When Father returns home and realizes what has occurred, he sobs. He expresses regret for lying and explains that he did so to keep Christopher from finding out about his mother’s abandonment of the family. Additionally, Christopher’s father acknowledges killing Wellington following a dispute with Mrs. Shears, his lover.
Christopher sneaks out of the house and heads to London to live with his mother because he feels he can no longer trust his father and is now terrified of him. He navigates police and narrowly avoids being hit by a train while overcoming his condition’s social anxieties and restrictions. She is completely taken aback by his visit to his mother’s apartment because she had no idea that Christopher’s father had been keeping her letters from him. Christopher spends some time settling in at his mother’s and Mr. Shears’s flat, but the conflict he causes prompts his mother to decide to leave Mr. Shears to return to Swindon. Christopher and his mother move into a new apartment, and his father starts paying him visits on a regular basis. After Toby, Christopher’s pet rat, passes away, Christopher’s father gives him a puppy. Christopher takes his A-level math exam at school and receives an A, the highest grade possible. Christopher declares at the book’s conclusion that he will take additional physics and math A-level exams before enrolling in a university in a different town. He is confident in his abilities because he was able to solve the murder of Wellington, had the guts to look for his mother, and wrote the book we have just finished.
It’s a very happy ending, to be sure, but it does come as a bit of a surprise. Only a few pages remain in the book, and things for Christopher have been getting worse and worse throughout the entire second half of the book. There were more negative than positive things, he claims (233). 137). Among them, Toby dies. (RIP Toby. We hardly knew ye. ).
But then everything turns around in pretty short order. Whats the catalyst for such a change? Well, lets see. Christopher’s father offers yet another sincere apology, but Christopher is utterly unmoved. Then, however, he goes out and buys him a puppy, which makes Christopher incredibly happy. Because his mother’s place is too small, the puppy will have to live with Christopher’s father, which should facilitate their reconciliation.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time has a fantastic conclusion that makes us think back to the beginning. Thats what we call some satisfying symmetry. Though we wouldn’t anticipate anything less from our narrator, who loves math. What we might not anticipate is the lovely red bow he uses to seal it.
And I know I can do this because I went to London on my own, I found my mother, I was brave, I wrote a book, and I was able to solve the mystery of Who Killed Wellington. (233. 170).
Then Christopher learns that he passed his exam with the best grade possible. He starts working on a garden with his father and studying for the upcoming difficult math test in the months that follow. The final reflection on Christopher’s adventure in the book, though, is really what makes the ending so happy and quite inspirational.
