How Much Does it Cost to Start a Dog Breeding Business?

While some sources claim that you can breed a dog for as little as $500, that is categorically untrue.

With a start-up cost of just a few hundred dollars, responsible breeding is not feasible.

That is insufficient even to purchase a healthy female dog with the right to breed.

How much do dog breeders make a month?

Aside from that, the top priority on your list should be training and developing a relationship with the dog you intend to breed with.

Don’t breed for the money. I repeat, do not breed for the money.

There are a lot more profitable business concepts available that also won’t accidentally wipe out an entire species if implemented incorrectly.

However, I’ve actually put together a brief list of the initial costs before you can begin breeding.

  • Health testing (hip/shoulder, x-ray, heart, blood work, etc.): $750-$1,500
  • Stud fee: $500-$2,500
  • Whelping box, kit, etc.: $150-$500
  • Prenatal, birth, and postnatal care: $250-$1,000
  • Complications during birth like c-section: $0-$1,500
  • Puppy shots, deworming, collars: $200-$800
  • Puppy food: $100-$500
  • Enrichment for puppies: $150-$1,000
  • Socialization trips: $100-$250
  • New owner starter kits: $0-$250
  • Show titles (trips, grooming, training lessons, etc.): $0-$2,000
  • Responsible dog breeding can cost up to $8,500 just in the first year.

Every breed will have different business expenses, and I frequently discuss responsible breeding.

The bare minimum required to maintain an ethical business is already at the lower end of $2,000.

Please don’t think you can purchase the neighbor’s dog as a stud for $50.

Breeding can cost up to $12,000 or more in the first year, although some expenses, such as show titles or a c-section, are obviously non-existent for many breeders.

As was already mentioned, having more dogs will increase costs and yield a higher profit.

If you plan to be a breeder for the long term, even though the cost in the second and third years will probably be lower, you’ll occasionally run into very unexpected costs.

How Many Litters Can a Dog Have?

The ideal time to retire a female is when she is 5–6 years old or when she has had 3–4 litters.

It’s not advisable to use a female dog in a breeding program for more than 3 or 4 litters, despite the fact that it might be alluring for slightly larger amateur operations (don’t get me started on how puppy mills do it).

The potential health risks for your female dog significantly increase, and the same is true for the pups. Also, older dogs can’t provide optimal care in many cases.
