And when “fresh pet food” is advertised on social media, it makes sense to be curious about these pre-cooked mixtures of real meat and vegetables that are delivered right to our doors.
Fresh pet food resembles those pricey, “chunky” varieties of canned food, in contrast to traditional kibble pet food. To maintain freshness between servings, it contains fewer or no preservatives and is kept in the refrigerator. Although fresh pet food sounds more enticing in name, we wondered if it was actually a healthier choice for dogs and cats. I spoke with Dr. X to learn more about fresh pet food diets. Lindsey Bullen, a veterinary nutritionist with the Veterinary Specialty Hospital of the Carolinas, is board-certified. Bullen has previously provided consultation to pet food manufacturers, but not to any of the services we list below.
