Although I am familiar with most of the pet cameras currently available, I have only used the Furbo dog camera.
Recently, my sister and her husband visited us, leaving their French Bulldog Hemingway in the care of his sister. They both have demanding jobs that require long hours, so they used the Furbo dog camera to keep in touch with their dog while they were away from home. I asked them to demonstrate how the product worked so I could see it in action and then I played around with the app a little.
So, when I had the chance to test the Furbo dog camera for myself, I jumped at the chance. I was aware of a few things about the Furbo dog camera before putting them to the test:
Archie, my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy, spends the majority of the day by my side because I’m fortunate enough to work from home. But there are times when I have to leave him at home by himself. I still feel bad leaving him alone despite the fact that he is fully housebroken and does well when left alone for extended periods of time, which is why I have grown to love the Furbo dog camera. I can still monitor him using the Furbo mobile app, and I can shower him with affection by giving him some treats.
I was happy to discover that my Furbo dog camera arrived in a very straightforward and waste-free package. The device itself, the power supply, a 7-foot USB cable, and the quick-start manual were all packaged safely in a simple box.
I considered the Furbo to be very well-made in terms of construction. It appeared to be sturdy and had a wide enough base to prevent easy tipping. The device’s treat storage compartment was covered by a secure lid that was simple to remove and unlikely to fall out if it tipped over. The USB cable was also long enough for me to plug the device in the desired location.
Despite a few hiccups, setting up the Furbo dog camera was generally straightforward, and I found the app to be very user-friendly.
The Google Play Store allowed me to quickly download the app, and logging in was simple. The app automatically looked for and paired with my Furbo via Bluetooth after I logged in. When it came time for setup, the device quickly initially connected to my Wi-Fi account, but the connection repeatedly failed before it finally started working. I received an email from Furbo with troubleshooting advice as I was going over the setup instructions once more, and as a result, I was able to reset the device and finish the setup.
I finished the Archies profile in the app and made some settings before using the camera. I could change the video quality, enable or disable night vision, set the time zone, alter the volume, and toggle the Wi-Fi on and off using a straightforward menu. Additionally, I was able to record my own “Snack Call” for the gadget to play before discharging treats.
I accessed the video feed and activated the treat-shooting button. My recording was played by the Furbo dog camera, which then released four treats. Needless to say, Archie was immediately intrigued. His ears perked up at the recording of my voice, and he focused on the treat feeder’s mechanical noise. He chased them down as soon as the treats were distributed.
The bag of Crazy Dog Train-Me treats that came with the device was initially what I used to fill the hopper. Among other ingredients, they are made with whole-ground potatoes, barley flour, and pork liver. They contain just 1 and are small enough to fit through the hopper. 5 calories each. They are also corn-free and made in the USA.
Unfortunately, Archie didn’t like the taste of these candies, and I didn’t like that the device shot out four candies at once. I ultimately replaced them with a small amount of Archies kibble.
I played around with the app a little bit more after testing the treat-tossing feature to evaluate the app’s audio and video quality. I noticed a slight lag in both the audio and visual streaming during testing because I was in the same room as the Furbo. The device is meant to be used from outside the home, so this lag is unlikely to have any impact on how well it works.
I discovered that the Furbo dog camera can take pictures and record audio/video for up to 60 seconds, which can then be shared via social media, text message, or email on a smartphone. Although the device’s audio quality could have been better, I don’t plan to use that feature frequently. Depending on where the unit was placed, the image quality was excellent, and the wide-angle lens allowed me to see the entire room.
The Barking Alert feature of the Furbo is another feature. The device notifies your smartphone via push notification when it hears your dog barking. Archie only barks when one of my cats tries to eat from his food bowl, so I wasn’t able to test this feature fully.
However, it appears that while the Barking Alert may be a useful feature, it is a little too sensitive based on other user reviews of the product. If you discover that to be the case, you can modify the feature’s sensitivity or just disable it.
The Furbo dog camera was generally well-designed and simple to use. The Barking Alert and treat-throwing features of the device and the smartphone app could both use some improvements in terms of audio quality and sensitivity, but they are both perfectly usable as is. The Furbo dog camera did not let me down, and I intend to use it well into the future.
The Furbo dog camera is a great choice if you’re looking for a way to monitor your dog while you’re away from home, help reduce his separation anxiety, or you just want to have fun with your dog. Although it may not be the best option for factors like audio clarity, it is simple to set up and use and does the job.

When you want to reward your dog, use the treat-tossing feature by simply tapping a button on your smartphone. You can also activate the clicking sound feature to help your dog learn new tricks more quickly.
